01 Oct Joanne’s Story
Baby Loss Awareness Week is an opportunity for me to raise more awareness on the true impact that pregnancy and baby loss can cause, and to highlight the importance that bereavement support plays during what can be an extremely isolating time.
I’m Jo, and in 2022 after attending the first ultrasound scan of our baby, we were told there was no heartbeat. The lack of available support during this time meant that I developed postnatal anxiety, and PTSD following the birth of our Rainbow baby girl. Not only did this have a profound impact on my life during my maternity leave, but it also affected my ability to continue my job as a Registered Veterinary nurse as returning to a clinical environment became ‘triggers’ for my past loss. I feel very fortunate that I was able to receive CBT and EMDR therapy from a birth trauma and loss organisation, as well as support from others at Sands. My story is just the beginning of helping to improve the future care and support that others receive.
There are many Baby Loss Awareness Week organisations that offer support to anyone affected by pregnancy and baby loss. If you need support, please visit our support page or organisations page to find the right support for you.
